It is still painful; pondering on the departure of our highly respected and beloved Professor O. Akinyele, who to us was a worthy Father, teacher and mentor.
I was privileged to have been taught by him at the University of Ibadan in 100 level (1986/87) and also 400 level (1989/90). It was always very exciting to be in his class in those days. Though a strict, no nonsense person, he was also very kind and friendly. As Dean, Faculty of Science and later Deputy Vice-Chancellor, he was always accessible when we needed his attention or help.
In 2015, many years after he left for the USA, I happily was privileged to meet him again during the Annual Conference of the Nigerian Mathematical Society (NMS) which was hosted by the University of Lagos (UNILAG); he was honoured that year, alongside some other distinguished mathematicians with the Fellowship of the NMS (the first of its kind in the history of the Society). I was really thrilled to realise that he still recognised me and even remembered my name after so many years. I got his e-mail address and was able to communicate with him afterwards.
It is always painful when good people depart this transitory life; nevertheless, we have faith and hope that they are in a better place. To the most gracious and merciful God be all glory for ever. Amen.
